Jefferson County - Alderfer/Three Sisters, Ponderosa Loop

This 3.2 mile hike has beautiful views of the “Three Sisters” rock formation, and the trail is dappled with sunlight as you hike through the forest. The views are wonderful, and the fall colors may start to show at this high-elevation area!

Take I-70 west to the Evergreen Parkway exit (Hwy 74). Take Hwy 74 to downtown Evergreen, and turn right at the light heading south onto Hwy 73. Go .6 miles and turn right onto Buffalo Park Road. Follow Buffalo Park Road for about 2 miles to the SECOND parking area near a big open field.

Jefferson County - Crown Hill Park, Wildlife Sanctuary Trail

This precious sanctuary in the middle of Wheat Ridge is the perfect place to explore without leaving the city, and it is a great hike for beginning toddler hikers! The wildlife sanctuary is protected by Jefferson County and is home to some magnificent birds. Please bring a stroller as there is a short stroller walk to the entrance where the kids will start exploring.

From I-70, take the Kipling exit south to 26th Ave. Turn east (left) onto 26th Ave. and park in the FIRST parking lot on the right (near the horse arena). Meet at the parking area and we will walk together to the wildlife sanctuary.

Jefferson - Clement Park, Johnson Lake Stroller Walk

Come for a good stroller walk around Clement Park and Johnson Lake. This 1.5 mile route is mostly flat with a paved surface. Kids should be in strollers, and we'll walk at a good pace to get in a morning workout.

Meet at Bowles Ave. just east of Wadsworth in Littleton. Take the first right turn off Bowles into the parking lot near Barnes & Noble and Ultimate Electronics. Meet at the trail entrance.

Jefferson - Lookout Mountain Nature Center, Meadow Loop Trail

This is a 1.5 mile hike that includes forests as well as a beautiful meadow. The start of this hike is at a high elevation, but there is not much elevation gain on the trail. And the quiet beauty is unsurpassed! Since this is a higher elevation hike, the temperatures will definitely be cooler than they are in Denver, and the fall colors may be showing!

Take I-70 to the Lookout Mountain exit and follow the signs to the Lookout Mountain Nature center. Plan about 10 minutes of winding road from the I-70 exit to the top of Lookout Mountain. We will meet on the benches outside.

Jefferson County - Prospect Park, Prospect Park Trail

There are many places in the middle of suburbia that hold a bounty of nature’s beauty and this place is definitely one of them. Prospect Park has the best of both worlds, nature trails and a really fun playground! Our hike will include lakes, rivers, bridges, birds, frogs and foxes to keep your little ones occupied. Then we’ll have snacks/lunch at the playground that is in the shade!

Take I-70 to Ward Road Then Go South to 44th Ave go East. Get in the right lane. You’ll see a wooden sign saying Prospect Park just after a dog kennel facility. Turn right. Drive in as far south as you can (past lake) to the south parking lot.

Jefferson County - Apex Park, Pick N’ Sledge Trail

If you’re ready for a tough hike, this is the one for you! This 4.5 mile loop will take you through Apex park where you will get some spectacular city views as well as enjoy the cool forest breezes. This hike starts off as a gradual incline, then the incline gets more serious! Once you’re at the top, it’s all down on the return. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen since this hike is exposed.

Take I-70 to the Morrison Road exit and turn right at the light at the end of the off ramp. Go about a mile and turn left into the Heritage Square parking lot. At the far end of the lot is the trail head (do NOT meet at the lower trail head below Heritage Square).

Jefferson County - Waterton Canyon Toddler loop, Nature Trail

This fabulous hike around the ponds near Chatfield State Park will not dissapoint! Bring your toddler out for an adventure as we search for frogs, dragonflies, and other pond life. This .75 mile long trail is flat and easy, and sure to entertain!

Exit C470 onto S. Wadsworth Blvd. which becomes S. Platte Canyon Rd. Drive South past the US Army Corps of Engineers Visitor Center, the entrance to Chatfield State Park, and Chatfield Reservoir. Bear left following signs for Waterton Canyon and Denver Water's Kassler Center. Turn left into the parking lot just before the Kassler Center which is on the right. Go to the far end of the lot and meet at the trail head.

Jefferson County - Windy Saddle Park, Lookout Mountain Trail

This out and back trail travels through open forest for lots of shade on the hot summer days. There is some incline but nothing too hard and the way back is all downhill!

From Hwy 6 turn West on 19th Street (in Golden)Follow it up as it turns into Lookout Mountain Road/Lariet loop to the Windy Saddle parking lot on the right.

Jefferson County - Reynolds Park, Raven’s Roost Trail w/ Eagle View

This beautiful park is a bit of a drive, but worth it! There is a lot of wildlife in the area, and the terrain is diverse and beautiful. This 4.5 mile loop is wooded and cool with a pretty hefty incline at the start and down hill to finish.

Take C-470 to Hampden/Hwy 285 South. Take Hwy 285 for about 15 miles to the Foxton Road exit, just past Confier. Turn left off the ramp and there is a jog in the road so follow the signs to Reynolds Park. Then go 5.5 miles on Foxton Road to the entrance to the park on your right.

Jefferson County - Belmar Historical Park, Belmar lake trail

A beautiful natural area in the middle of suburbia! If you've never been to this park, you'll be amazed at how beautiful it is! We're sure to see plenty of ducks from the cool bridge overlook. This hike is lead by naturalist and field ornithologist Alison Kondler.

From Wadsworth and Alameda go south for .3 miles. At West Ohio Avenue turn west and go two blocks straight ahead through the Irongate Office parking lot. We'll meet at the west side of the white office building.

Jefferson County - Genesee Park, Braille Nature Trail

This gorgeous tree-covered hike winds gently down into the forest where a bevel of squirrels will keep us company! The one mile loop continues through moist forest land and back up to where we started. Originally a trail for the blind, this easy hike is flanked by a guide line.

Take I-70 west out of Denver to the Chief Hosa Exit 253. Turn right at off the exit then immediately right again onto Stapleton Drive. Go 1.1 miles, bearing left at the fork, to the trail head.

Jefferson County - Red Rocks Park, Amphitheatre Loop

This terrific hike is perfect for moms getting acquainted with the techniques of hiking with baby or anyone interested in testing out an easier hike. It’s less than 1.5 miles with fairly gradual inclines – steeper at the end.

Take C-470 to the Morrison Road exit. Go through Morrison and turn right at the sign for Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Meet at the trading post at the top of the hill.

Jefferson County - Elk Meadow Open Space, Painters Pause Trail

This hike is almost 4 miles and will have some exposure and some beautiful forest hiking. Although the trail is not steep, the distance ranks it as challenging. The views are lovely hence the name Painter's Pause.

Take I-70 west to the Evergreen Parkway exit (Hwy 74). Take Hwy 74 for several miles to the intersection with Lewis Ridge Road and turn right. Go less than a mile to the Elk Meadow parking lot.

Jefferson County - Welchester Park Trail, Welchester Park Trail

This flat half-mile trail is perfect for young toddlers just starting to hike. Kids will love jumping on two bridges, and if we’re really lucky we might spot raccoons, foxes, and a ton of birds! This trail is flat and just under a half mile.

From 6th Avenue West, exit off Simms and go north. Take Simms to 8th and go west (left). Park near 8th and Alkire and you will see sign for Welchester Park on the right.

Boulder - Marshal Mesa, Community Ditch Trail

This is a 2.4 mile low elevation loop hike with great views of the Flatirons. There are ascents and descents, but none very strenuous. The trail is mostly exposed and well maintained.

From Golden take Hwy 6 which merges into Highway 93 to go north toward Boulder. Take 93 to Marshall Drive and turn EAST. (This turn is opposite the Eldorado Springs turn off.) Immediately turn right into the trail head.

Arapahoe - South Platte Park, Owl Roost Trail

We’ll hike with the kids on a beautiful trail that is easy, flat and follows along the river and wildlife preserve for about a half mile. We may see Great-Horned Owls, Bald Eagles and plenty of Ducks. Lead by naturalist and field ornithologist Alison Kondler.

West of Aspen Grove Shopping Center. From South Santa Fe Drive and West Mineral Avenue, drive west on Mineral Avenue about one-eighth mile to the RTD Park-N-Ride main entrance (the second right turn). Turn north on South Platte River Parkway, go two blocks and turn LEFT onto Carson Drive. This road leads into the parking lot at the Carson Nature Center where we’ll meet.


Sunday, September  28 - 9:30 a.m.

Jefferson County - Centenial Cone, Mayhem Gulch Trail

Although it's a long distance, the trail is pretty flat and mostly shaded. Bring lots of water and come for a gorgeous outing with other moms!

From West U.S. Hwy. 6 and State Hwy. 93 west of Golden, travel west on Hwy. 6 about 11 miles. Turn right at Hwy. 119, and travel about 1/2 mile. Turn right onto Douglas Mountain Road and travel about one mile to Centennial Cone Road. Turn right and travel and go about a mile to Centennial Cone Rd., the west entry to the park

Jefferson County - South Valley Park, Coyote Song Trail

Although it’s close to the metro area, this area is quiet and wildlife abounds. This hike is about 2 miles and is mostly flat - great for first-time hikers and anyone interested in a gentle hike.

Take C470 to the Ken Caryl Ave. exit and go west. Merge left at the light onto Valley Road and follow signs for about 2 miles to South Valley Park on the left.

This gorgeous area is shadded, full of wild life, and a great place for experienced hikers to explore. Depending on the group we can take a longer or shorter hike. There are many trail options and interesting rock formations. Bring plenty of snacks and water!

Take I-70 west to the Evergreen Parkway exit (Hwy 74). Take Hwy 74 to downtown Evergreen, and turn right at the light heading south onto Hwy 73. Go .6 miles and turn right onto Buffalo Park Road. Follow Buffalo Park Road for just over a mile to the FIRST Alderfer/Three Sisters parking area.
